Il sistema Apricot Xen MULTI-USER consente di immagazzinare tutti i vostri dati sui Mainframes Apricot, potenti file servers da 20, 50 o 100 Mb sotto sistema operativo MS-DOS MULTI-TASKING.
Ogni mainframe è dotato di un processore 80286 con una memoria RAM di 2 Mb, un’unità di back up a nastro (stream tape) da 20 Mb ed un F.D.D. da 720 Kb (3,5”). Può pilotare sino a 32 stazioni di lavoro.
Ogni stazione di lavoro Xen workstation è dotata di un processore 80286, una memoria Ram di 1 Mb, un monitor Apricot paper white o colori, la tastiera Xen da 102 tasti ed il microscreen Apricot.
Possono essere collegati in rete sino a 10 mainframes per un totale complessivo di 64 stazioni di lavoro.
Apricot Xen Multi-user non si limita ad operare in ambiente MS-DOS. Un mainframe può anche operare sotto Xenix pilotando sino a 16 terminali.

Diciotto anni fa, oggi.

La TV ci fece vedere le file di attesa fuori dai negozi, in USA, per l'acquisto del software, cose che sono diventate poi familiari anche in Italia ma con l'avvento di Apple.

Nel negozio dove lavoravo all'apertura si presentò solo un cliente per acquistare il pacchetto. Fu l'unico che vedemmo, in tutta la giornata e nei giorni successivi. Non c'era poi quell'attesa febbrile...

Windows 3.0 (1990)

Microsoft realizes you may have heard this one before. And we agree that you have every reason to be skeptical.
Well, all of this was before new Microsoft Windows version 3.0. A GUI environment that will forever transform the way you use your PC.
Now, before you wonder what to do with all of your existing DOS applications (to say nothing about your existing DOS experience), the Windows environment works within your MS-DOS system. This is not a traumatic thing.
As a matter of fact, once you see the environment created by Windows 3.0, you'll think quite the contrary.
The first time you see it, you wont believe it. Archaic characters, mundane instructions, and even entire command sequences, have been replaced by a program manager full of clear, friendly icons. You're immediately comfortable.
When you work on more than one thing at a time, you'll quickly reap the benefits. Because the program manager welcomes on-screen multitasking of large Windows applications. Of course, without ever visiting the "C" prompt.
Through something with the complicated name of Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE), you can simplify your life. For example, with DDE, you can change information in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, and have those changes automatically show up in a "linked" table in a word processing document. Or vice versa.
You can also easily access a network from within Windows. So, no matter how big the rivalry between research and accounting is on the softball field, everybody's on speaking terms in the office.
Even the setup program is graphical, only needing a few easy steps.
At this point, you probably think your machine will slow to a crawl the first time you try any of this.
We thought about that, too. So new Windows 3.0 breaks the 640K memory barrier that saddles other DOS programs. Giving you access to all the memory and power your 286 or 386 PC can muster
It all sounds incredible. Which it is. And, it's taking place in an intuitive, consistent graphical environment.

Microsoft sa che questa affermazione l’avete già sentita. E siamo d’accordo che abbiate tutte le ragioni per essere scettici.
Bene, tutto questo accadeva prima della nuova versione 3.0 di Microsoft Windows. Un ambiente GUI che trasformerà per sempre il modo in cui usate il vostro PC.
Così, prima che vi chiediate cosa farne di tutte le applicazioni DOS esistenti (per non parlare della vostra precedente esperienza nell’ambiente DOS), l’ambiente Windows lavora all’interno del vostro sistema MS-DOS.
Come dato di fatto, una volta che avrete visto l’ambiente creato da Windows 3.0 penserete esattamente l’opposto.
La prima volta che lo vedrete, non ci crederete. Caratteri arcaici, espressioni comuni, persino intere sequenze di comandi sono state sostituite da un ‘program manager’ ricco di icone chiare e amichevoli. Vi metterete subito a vostro agio.
Quando lavorerete a più di una cosa per volta ne apprezzerete rapidamente i vantaggi. Perché per il ‘program manager’ sono benvenute le complesse applicazioni video ‘multitasking’ di Windows. Ovviamente, senza dover mai rivedere il prompt ‘C’.
Tramite un qualcosa, dal complicato nome di “Dynamic Data Exchange” (DDE), vi semplificherete la vita. Per esempio, con il DDE potrete cambiare le informazioni su un foglio elettronico di Microsoft Excel e fare in modo che i cambiamenti siano visualizzati in tabelle ‘collegate’ all’interno di un documento dell’elaboratore di testi. Oppure viceversa.
Dall’interno di Windows potrete anche accedere ad una rete così che, per quanto possa essere grande la rivalità nel campo del softball tra la ricerca e la contabilità, tutti nell’ufficio comunicano.
Anche il programma di ‘setup’ è grafico e richiede solo pochi, semplici passaggi.
A questo punto probabilmente penserete che la vostra macchina si impantanerà la prima volta che proverete a fare una delle cose dette.
Abbiamo pensato anche a questo. E così il nuovo Windows 3.0 rompe la barriera dei 640K che imbrigliano altri programmi DOS. Dandovi l’accesso a tutta la memoria e la potenza che il vostro 286 o 386 hanno a disposizione.
Tutto questo sembra incredibile. E lo è. E si svolge in un ambiente grafico intuitivo e coerente.

In tema di anniversari, il mousepad originale che Microsoft diffuse in occasione del lancio di Windows 95.

Toshiba Dynapad T200 (1994)

Non ho mai avuto il piacere neppure di vederlo, mentre il Compaq Concerto di un paio di anni prima l'ho usato per qualche settimana.
Un grasso iPad-like da 2 kg, grande come un foglio A4; il cuore: un processore Intel 486 DX2 a 40 MHz, 4 MB di RAM standard e un hard disk da 80 Mb.

The Toshiba Dynapad T200 series replaces conventional pen and paper with computerised pen and paper.

Instead of leaving the office with loads of bits of paper to fill in and then converting it on your desktop later, you simply write the information straight into the Dynapad T200 and let the PC do all the transferring and downloading.

Ci sono già stati Pen PC prima di adesso, ma nessuno così avanzato come il Dynapad T200. Come c'è da aspettarsi dal leader mondiale nei computer portatili, c'è la possibilità di connettere un floppy drive e ci sono due slot PCMCIA (tipo II e III).

Il Dynapad modello T200CS ha un video a colori (256 Super VGA), MSDOS 6.2 e Windows for Pen Computing.

Tutte queste caratteristiche sono ottenute dal chip 486 DX2 SL enhanced e da una leggera batteria agli ioni di litio che, in combinazione con la modalità di risparmio energetico, vi fornisce l'impressionante durata di 3 ore per l'uso continuo del PC.

Il Dynapad serie T200 è in ogni aspetto potente come il più avanzato dei PC portatili, pur rimanendo notevolmente più piccolo e leggero, con i suoi due chilogrammi. E questo è niente, se pensate che ha la possibilità di scrivere più di 25.000 fogli in formato A4. Pensate un po' a portarli tutti quanti con voi.
