Nel 1986 John Akers, presidente dell'IBM, ha manovrato il timone della società per cambiare rotta e non sorprende che siano stati necessari più di due anni perché l'industria informatica si rendesse conto che l'IBM aveva preso a muoversi in una direzione completamente nuova.

Verbatim Datalife Colors (1991)

Per anni il colore dei floppy disk, da 8 pollici prima e da 5 e 1/4 poi, è stato un funebre, uniforme e tetro NERO. Qualche produttore ha tentato di colorare i 5 pollici e 1/4, ma non ha avuto una grande accoglienza di mercato.
Con i 3 e 1/2 è andata un po' meglio: più piccoli, non più flosci, l'idea di usare i colori come codice di archiviazione non era male, anche se non l'ho mai vista applicata da qualcuno.
Ma se oggi devo usare un FD ne cerco sempre uno a colori; per fortuna, sparsi per i cassetti, ne ho alcune decine e, probabilmente, se ne vendono ancora. ( è il 2009 mentre scrivo...)

Ho cercato di lasciare i riferimenti ai colori nelle tre espressioni:

Green che è il colore dei dollari, comunemente tradotto in "verdoni"
In the pink che è invece una espressione arcaica per "in ottima salute".

Stacker (1991 - 1994)

La prima versione di Stacker, per DOS 3.x e 4.x. Viene pubblicizzata anche una Stacker coprocessor card.

Se non fosse stato per questo programma, la vita del mio Olivetti M280 (Intel 80286 a 12 MHz) e quella del mio secondo portatile, Compaq Contura 3/25 (Intel 80386sx a 25 MHz) sarebbero state molto più brevi.
In un'epoca in cui il costo degli HD era proibitivo, Stacker fu la soluzione.
Da tempo c'erano in giro prodotti, tipo quelli della PKWare, che servivano per comprimere in un solo archivio uno o più file, riducendone lo spazio occupato su disco; per riutilizzare i dati, però, era necessarioPKUn-zippare il tutto da capo.
PKWare fece anche il benemerito PKLite (il manuale lo trovate qui) che comprimeva i file eseguibili, (quelli con estensione exe o com) lasciandoli eseguibili, con la caratteristica cioè che si potevano lanciare direttamente senza prima decomprimerli; altri software analoghi cominciarono a diffondersi.
La Stack Electronics uscì sul mercato, nel 1990, con il suo software che permetteva l'uso, del tutto trasparente all'utente, di un sistema di compressione dei dati di tutto l'hard disk on the fly: il disco non solo raddoppiava (beh, quasi...) la sua capacità, ma addirittura diventava anche più veloce nei tempi di accesso, lettura e scrittura. Il successo fu notevole e la diffusione si contò a milioni di installazioni.


La versione 3.1 di Stacker, compatibile con il DOS 6.0. Pubblicità del 1994.

Nel 1993 la Microsoft rilasciò l' MS-DOS 6.0 che conteneva un programma di compressione disco, DoubleSpace, poi DriveSpace nella versione 6.22 dell'MS-DOS, che Stac denunciò come copiato in parte dal proprio prodotto, grazie agli studi preliminari, non andati a buon fine, che Microsoft aveva fatto con Stac per verificare se integrare nel suo sistema operativo la tecnologia innovativa della società californiana.
L'azione legale fu parzialmente vinta da Stac, che poi arrivò ad un accordo extragiudiziale con Microsoft.
Intanto però i dischi diventavano sempre più capaci e il loro costo si abbassò drasticamente: il mercato dei software di compressione degli hard disk uscì di scena.

Questi software di compressione disco in realtà creavano un unico file, che conteneva tutta la struttura del disco, eccezion fatta per la parte di boot e per alcuni file di configurazione e gestione. I problemi che potevano nascere erano quindi legati a questa criticità; spegnendo il PC senza i dovuti passaggi si poteva danneggiare il file e perdere tutto il contenuto della propria macchina; altrettanto delicata era l'infezione da virus, ancora di diffusione molto limitata, però.
Sulle mie macchine non ho mai avuto perdite di dati, anche se in un paio di occasioni ho dovuto far ricorso ai programmi di manutenzione.
L'ultimo discendente di questa famiglia di software è costituito oggi dalle cartelle compresse, comparse con Windows NT, che qualche volta utilizzo per le mie directory di documenti e per le mie chiavette USB più vecchie e meno capaci.

3M (1991)

Il packaging dei floppy disk 3M ha subìto poche variazioni: per anni è stato semplicemente un'anodina scatola di cartone argentata. Il prezzo dei dischetti da 5 e 1/4 era notevole: una confezione (da dieci pezzi) arrivò a costare anche cinquantamila lire. Ecco allora l'evidenza che veniva data, in questo caso, al 'regalo' di un undicesimo dischetto (come dire: il 10% è gratis) e, inoltre, per far risparmiare tempo, i dischetti erano preformattati. La 3M indicava anche, in basso a destra, che sarebbe stata sponsor ufficiale dei giochi olimpici del 1992.

Pensa al tuo dischetto formattato gratuito come a un modo per aumentare la tua produttività o il tuo ritorno di investimento. In entrambi i casi, è una mossa scaltra.
